Istana Kampung Glam

The Sultan's Gate
Istana Kampung Glam itself
View all 26 photos...
I dedicate this segment of fotopage specially to my students in P4. Here is the history of Kampung Glam. Some of these pictures which i added up are the ones which you all saw during class presentations. As for the rest who are reading this, enjoy the history of Kampung Glam.

Istana Kampung Glam
'Kampung' literally means 'village or settlement', while 'Glam' is the name of a tree which grew in abundance during the earlier period of Singapore. 'Istana Kampung Glam' or 'Kampong Glam Palace' was once the home of Sultan Hussain Muaazzam Shah ibni Sultan Mahmud.

The extensive compound was beautifully lawn and the whole Istana ground was protected by a walled perimeter.Small kampung-style houses were built around this perimeter wall for the Sultan's kin, servants and artisan. Currently, Istana Kampung Glam is being restored and is now part of National Education's Malay heritage. Not much of picture of the palace itself due to restoration, but it'll be opened probably in June.

Gedung Kuning (The Bendahara's house)
On the left side of the main entrance is this large grand house known as 'Gedung Kuning'. Traditionally, it has always been painted yellow, thus the name 'Gedung kuning' or Yellow Mansion in English. Yellow has always been the symbol of royalty to the Malays past and present. This place was once occupied by the Sultan's descendants up to Tengku Mahmud, but was sold upon the latter's death. Now, Gedung Kuning has been turned into a restaurant know as 'Tepak Sireh Restaurant'

I am interested in the blueprint or layout of the istana, do you happen to have any you can share wtih me? Sat 12-Apr-2008 02:24
